Today I was thinking about where I find many of the titles for songs I write. Just thought I would share some of the places I find them.
I always have my songwriting hat on, so titles seem to pop up in many places.
1. Movie Titles
2. Facebook Posts – - Sometimes my friends say some things that would make great songs
3. Cosmo Magazine, or magazines in general. I find women’s mags have more titles that would make good love and pop songs
4. Closed Captioning – - Sometimes I watch TV with captioning on, because seeing the dialogue makes certain phrases stick out more.
5. Slang, or common language. - – Sometimes slang can make your song dated, but sometimes it makes for a great song. What are some fun things people at work say?
6. Your Destination or Object Writing. – - When you make lists of phrases from your writing, you can find some real gems of titles.
7. Other song titles. – - Titles are not copyrightable – so you can write a song with the same title. Just make sure you don’t copy lyrics or melodies. Really make it different.
8. Books – - sometimes I will pick up random books and skim the pages looking for interesting phrases that would make good titles.
9. Thesaurus – Just browsing reference books spark my creativity sometimes.
10. Random Word Generators – There are some good random word generators online. Use them for titles or destination writing ideas.
Ideas for songs are everywhere we look. There is no shortage of inspiration, if you seek it out.
Remember it is not what you write about, it is HOW you write it.
